Zoom whitening combines a high dose of carbamide peroxide with light activation. After cleaning your teeth, the dentist covers the lips and gums to insure against leakage or burns. Then the carbamide gel is applied to the teeth and left on for 15 minutes. Application of the Zoom light follows. Usually, this process is repeated three times, for a total treatment time of 45 minutes.
Zoom gel works by oxygenation, which breaks up deep stains in the teeth. A layer on the enamel, called the pellicle, ordinarily desensitizes the teeth to everyday usage but is temporarily stripped by the Zoom gel. This is why some patients report a side effect known colloquially as “the zingers”—or extreme tooth sensitivity. Like pellicle removal, the effect is temporary and can be minimized with ibuprofen. As with any medication before a procedure, approve it with your West Hollywood dentist first.
