Bleaching procedures typically use either carbamide peroxide or hydrogen peroxide as their bleaching ingredient. Peroxide breaks down into oxygen and water, which is harmless to the structure of the tooth. The oxygen removes both deep and superficial stains. Professional-strength bleaches can be applied using customized mouth trays at home, or they can be applied in our office. The in-office bleaching treatments are often light-activated. Light-activated bleaching also uses peroxide-based whiteners, but these bleaching solutions are faster. Teeth can be eight to ten shades lighter after just one treatment.
