Getting a crown is a simple procedure, it usually involves two office visits and has little to no recovery time. Because they are helpful for various issues, we suggest dental crowns for our patients for several different reasons.
• Change the color of extremely discolored teeth
• Cover and protect a dental implant
• Help hold a dental bridge
• Improve the appearance of misaligned teeth
• Keeping a broken tooth together
• Protect a tooth after a root canal procedure
• Restore a tooth with a significantly worn surface
• Save a fragile tooth
• Supporting a tooth that has a large filling but not much tooth
If our Encino dentist sees any of these issues, a crown will likely be the course of action.
Crowns are available in different materials; these are often chosen based on the location of the tooth which needs a crown. Porcelain is the material we use most often in our practice, especially if a visible tooth needs a crown. However, you can choose the preferred material, the kinds of crowns include:
• Metals- There are several different metals available for your crown. Gold is still occasionally used for crowns, as well as platinum alloys. Cobalt-chromium and nickel-chromium alloys are the most commonly used metals for crowns.
• Porcelain-fused -to -metal- For this kind of crown, a layer of porcelain tops a metal crown usually for aesthetic reasons. This combination of metal and porcelain is often preferred when a crown is placed to help hold a bridge.
• Resin- An all resin crown is available, but we caution against them because they do not wear as well as other materials and are prone to cracks.
• All Porcelain- In our office, we prefer the all porcelain crown. It is durable and is easy to match with tooth colors. Additionally, it is the best choice for our patients who have metal allergies.
