Because your long-term well being is our goal, there may be times when our dentist in North Hollywood will find an extraction is the best course of action for your situation. Even though modern dentistry’s goal is usually to save the tooth, occasionally a removal is unavoidable.
REASONS FOR TOOTH EXTRACTION
Because no two patients are alike, we find that a procedure which worked well for one patient is ineffective for another. There are some universal reasons that a dentist in our practice would opt to pull a tooth.
• Advanced gum disease- If periodontal disease has gone unchecked for many years, it will eventually destroy the teeth, gums, and jaw. To save other teeth, our dentist may recommend extraction.
• Cracked tooth- Often a tooth with a crack can be repaired by bonding, veneers, or a crown. However, depending on the size and location of the breaks, there are times when extraction is the only answer.
• Extensive tooth decay- Tooth decay is often a problem that is relatively easy to correct, often with a root canal. While this is the case for some types of tooth decay, severe tooth decay is much more problematic and harder to treat. A tooth with signs of extreme decay puts your health at risk and needs extraction.
• Orthodontic treatment- There are times when our dentist will need to extract one or more teeth, so the other teeth will have enough space once they reach the correct position.
• Wisdom teeth- Most people experience the eruption of their third molars (commonly known as wisdom teeth) between the ages of 17-25, though the teeth may appear later for some people. Occasionally, there is enough room in the mouth to accommodate the new teeth, but often the teeth will not fit in the space available and cause crowding of the other teeth. If left alone, this may result in the need for orthodontic treatment to straighten the crowded teeth. Impacted wisdom teeth is a common problem for many patients. These teeth grow under the surface of the gum, frequently into the next molar.
While we make every effort to save damaged teeth, there are occasions when we must extract a tooth for your well-being. Contact our office with any questions or concerns about tooth extraction.
