Traditional metal braces use elastic bands to hold the wire in place. The elastic bands push the wire against the brace, and this creates friction which works against the braces effort to move the teeth. Overcoming the resistance so that the teeth realign takes time and can be painful. The process also requires frequent orthodontist visits to adjust the brackets and bands.
Damon braces are called self- ligating. This term means that the braces use a moveable piece to hold the wire in place. So instead of being fixed by friction, the wire moves through the bracket much like a tunnel. This flexibility allows the teeth to align faster and with much less discomfort than with conventional metal braces.
Most of our patients with Damon braces have significantly shorter treatment times than patients with traditional metal braces. Additionally, a patient with Damon braces needs fewer orthodontist visits and is able to keep their teeth and braces cleaner than a patient with typical metal braces.
Damon braces are available in your choice of metal brackets or ceramic brackets. As with other ceramic brackets, Damon braces will be more discreet than metal brackets. However, the wire used in Damon braces is metal and somewhat visible. It is also worth noting that, unlike other types of newer orthodontic treatments, Damon braces are useful for younger patients as well as adults and older teens.
