Generally speaking, veneers are the preferable option because they require the removal of less tooth structure. While veneers require a thin layer of enamel to be removed from the front of the tooth, crowns require that the tooth be shaved and reshaped substantially. If there is enough healthy tooth structure available, and if the patient does not suffer from bruxism or TMJ, then veneers are the preferable choice. If the teeth are worn, chipped, and exposed with decay, then dental crowns may be more suiting.
It is important to note that it is perfectly reasonable to have some teeth replaced with veneers and others to be replaced with crowns. They are both made of porcelain, and a good cosmetic dentist will be able to make it so that no outside observer is able to tell the difference. It simply depends on the most appropriate solution for each additional tooth.
