The study showed that people who had no teeth had poorer cognitive function than people with some of their teeth, and people who had some of their teeth had poorer cognitive function than people with all of their teeth. Therefore, there appears to be a clear link between a person’s oral health and memory function.
Scientists have several theories as to why this is the case. It could be that poor dental health is a result of an unhealthy diet, so a person is not getting all the proper nutrients. Not getting enough “brain food” could affect both the teeth and the brain. Another explanation is that gum disease could infect the circulatory system, which could ultimately affect the brain. If you want to prevent both problems, our dentists can help.
